ABSTRACT

In this paper, we have mapped the coping methods used to address the coronavirus pandemic by members of the academic community. We conducted an anonymous survey of a convenient sample of 674 faculty/staff members and students from September to December 2020. A modified version of the RCOPE scale was used for data collection. The results indicate that both religious and existential coping methods were used by respondents. The study also indicates that even though 71% of informants believed in God or another religious figure, 61% reported that they had tried to gain control of the situation directly without the help of God or another religious figure. The ranking of the coping strategies used indicates that the first five methods used by informants were all non-religious coping methods (i.e., secular existential coping methods): regarding life as a part of a greater whole, regarding nature as an important resource, listening to the sound of surrounding nature, being alone and contemplating, and walking/engaging in any activities outdoors giving a spiritual feeling. Our results contribute to the new area of research on academic community's coping with pandemic-related stress and challenges.

ABSTRACT

Attachment insecurity is associated with lower satisfaction and lower felt security in romantic relationships, especially during times of stress such as coping with a global pandemic. Heightened external stressors for couples are associated with poorer relationship quality, but how couples cope with stress together, or their dyadic coping strategies, is associated with the maintenance of relationship satisfaction. In the current study, we followed 184 couples living together during the COVID-19 pandemic to test whether specific coping strategies buffered people higher in attachment anxiety and avoidance from lower satisfaction and felt security in the early weeks and ensuing months of the pandemic. Our findings demonstrate that perceiving more emotion-focused dyadic coping—being affectionate and using intimacy—buffered the negative association between attachment anxiety and relationship satisfaction and felt security, both concurrently and over several months of the pandemic. In addition, problem-focused perceived dyadic coping backfired for people higher in attachment anxiety;they felt less satisfied when they perceived more problem-focused coping—which involves being solution-focused and using instrumental support—in their relationship. In contrast, people higher in attachment avoidance were buffered against lower relationship satisfaction when they perceived more problem-focused dyadic coping and were not buffered by emotion-focused coping. The current findings suggest the importance of tailoring coping strategies to a partner's attachment style for relationship quality and felt security during times of stress.

ABSTRACT

This study examined psychological health and coping strategies among faculty and staff at a Saudi Arabian university. A web-based self-administered survey was used to assess probable anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and coping strategies by using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R), and Brief-COPE scale, respectively. Of 502 participants (mean age 36.04 ± 10.32 years, male: 66.3%), 24.1% (GAD-7 ≥ 10) had probable anxiety. Anxiety score was significantly higher in females (p < 0.001), those with a history of COVID-19 infection (p = 0.036), and participants with less work experience (p = 0.019). Approximately 40% of participants met the criteria of probable depression, with females (p < 0.001) and participants with less experience having more depressive symptoms. Around one-fourth (27.7%) of study participants indicated probable PTSD (score ≥ 33), with higher symptoms in females (p <0.001), less experienced staff (p < 0.001), and academic staff (p = 0.006). Correlation analysis indicated a significant positive correlation between anxiety and depression (r = 0.844, p < 0.001), anxiety and PTSD (r = 0.650, p < 0.001), and depression and PTSD (r = 0.676, p < 0.001). Active coping, religious/spiritual coping, and acceptance were common coping strategies, while substance use was the least adopted coping method among the study participants. This study indicated a high prevalence of probable psychological ailments among university staff.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the characteristics of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in college students during the outbreak of COVID-19, and to explore the mediating role of psychological resilience between social support and PTSD. Methods By using direct selection method, 572 college students in Anhui and Shanghai were selected and administered with General Characteristics Questionnaire, the PTSD Checklist-Civilian Version(PCL-C), Psychological Resilience Scale(PRS) and Social Support Rating Scale(SSRS). Results Among the participants, 25.0% had moderate PTSD symptoms, 11.7% had obvious PTSD symptoms, and the positive rate of PTSD was 36.7%. The prevalence of PTSD in college students was higher in males than in females (X2=4.31, P < 0.05). The junior students were higher than other students (X2=16.81, P < 0.01). The scores of social support, psychological resilience and PTSD were (33.79+or-4.83), (92.17+or-13.39) and (35.50+or-11.39), respectively. The correlations of all variables were statistically significant(r=-0.49-0.76, P < 0.05);The mediation test showed that social support could not only negatively predict PTSD directly(direct effect was -0.35), but also indirectly affect PTSD through psychological resilience(indirect effect was -0.32). Conclusion More than one third of college students have PTSD symptoms, and psychological resilience plays a partial mediating role in the relationship between social support and PTSD, social support can both directly and negatively predict PTSD and indirectly affect PTSD by increasing an individual's psychological resilience.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to find out the level of stress and coping methods among elderly in Sulaimanya city during the pandemic COVID-19. Through the snowballing sampling method, 394 elders were included to this study. After validation, two scales were used in this study;stress subscale from Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) and a culture-bound scale for determining coping methods. The results of this study showed that participants experienced a mild level of stress. Male participants, elders who live with their family, unvaccinated elders, physically passive elders have had higher stress level than female, elderly home, vaccinated, physical active elders. The findings also indicated that spiritual connection was the most common coping method used by the sample. Results of this study are the first and foremost way to share elder's unexpressed messages;it also can be a way for verbalizing their unspoken feelings. These results may also inform the elder's caregivers that elder's stress level and illness anxiety was not very high, strengthening their social support and spiritual connection may help them to reduce their distress into a lesser degree.

Background: Coronavirus disease (Covid-19) has become an epidemic that creates a psychological burden for nurses who provide nursing care in health services. The psychological condition of nurses who are not good will affect anxiety, coping strategies, and performance when carrying out nursing care. Purpose: This study aims to describe the psychological impact on coping strategies and the performance of nurses in health services. Methods: The research design used observational analytic with a cross sectional approach. The population used were nurses who worked in the COVID-19 isolation room at the Naval Central Hospital Dr. Ramelan Surabaya with 54 nurses. The sampling technique is used with total sampling, that is, the entire population is used as a sample in the study. Results: The results of the Spearman Rho correlation test have a relationship between the psychological impact of anxiety and the nurse's strategy in dealing with COVID-19 patients (ρ-value = 0.001);there is no relationship between the psychological impact of anxiety and the performance of nurses in dealing with covid 19 patients (ρ-value = 0.08);there is no relationship between the psychological impact of depression and the performance of nurses in dealing with covid 19 patients (ρ-value = 0.064). and there is a relationship between the psychological impact of stress and the performance of nurses in dealing with covid 19 patients (ρ-value = 0.0124);and there is a relationship between the psychological impact of stress and the performance of nurses in dealing with covid 19 patients (ρ-value = 0.0124). Conclusion: Psychological impacts do not always affect the performance of nurses, this can happen because nurses have good coping skills, plus nurses have attended seminars and training so that nurses' knowledge and skills have increased. Nurses have also been vaccinated, so nurses' anxiety and fear in treating COVID patients has decreased. © 2022 The authors.

ABSTRACT

The global Covid-19 pandemic led to the turn toward online learning and the need to adapt to new ways of English foreign language (EFL) teaching. This mixed-methods research aimed to examine teacher attitudes, well-being, and coping strategies related to online EFL teaching. The results indicated that Croatian EFL teachers had a positive attitude toward online teaching and acknowledged the importance of being digitally competent. EFL teachers were unsure about their ability to deal with online teaching and indicated their need to improve their IT skills. They revealed more negative than positive responses regarding their well-being and showed that they tried to actively cope during the pandemic. ABSTRACT

Insights on the indirect effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are critical for designing and implementing policies to alleviate the food security burden it may have caused, and for bolstering rural communities against similar macroeconomic shocks in the future. Yet estimating the causal effects of the pandemic is difficult due to its ubiquitous nature and entanglement with other shocks. In this descriptive study, we combine high-resolution satellite imagery to control for plot-level rainfall with household socio-economic panel data from 2014, 2016, 2019 and 2020, to differentiate the effect of the pandemic from climatic shocks on food security in Morogoro, Tanzania. We find evidence of decreased incomes, increased prices of staple foods, and increased food insecurity in 2020 relative to previous years, and link these changes to the pandemic by asking households about their perceptions of COVID-19. Respondents overwhelmingly attribute economic hardships to the pandemic, with perceived impacts differing by asset level.

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 has become of the most fatal pandemics in the century. It has widely spread among different countries in the world. Also, the pandemic has affected different sections of the society. It has psychologically and financially affected the individuals also. In this scenario, it is important to analyze the feeding and income coping strategies of the salaried class employees. For this, a questionnaire was developed using Google Form and was sent across different salaried class employees of Kerala. A total of 100 samples were taken and the analysis was done. The findings of the study indicated that most of them did stock up food during COVID-19, and those who did not preferred home deliveries from supermarkets. When financial strategies are considered, a higher strain and a lower emergency saving was witnessed among those of the lower income group. The palliative measures by the Government were equally welcomed by all the income groups except the medical facility.

ABSTRACT

The Covid-19 pandemic has been an existential boundary situation on a global scale. Existential resilience includes the ability to navigate through existential crises and creates resources to help people avoid paralysis as to keep moving in the face of existential calamity. There are practical ways in which they may foster existential resilience through explorations of past challenges, recognising existential themes in everyday life and through learning new coping strategies. Existential resilience is hence based on several assumptions that help to differentiate it from resilience in the context of more general challenges. There are numerous ways in which people may nurture existential resilience across several levels and which coaches may use as a framework for working with clients both during and post-pandemic. Existential resilience kicks in when existential themes are at the root of the adversity. Existential coaching presents a fertile ground to nurture existential resilience due to its defining characteristics grounded in existential philosophy and equips people to better deal with life's inevitable existential crises, including the effects of similarly inevitable future pandemics. ABSTRACT

PurposeThe study assessed the impact of technostress creators, work–family conflict and perceived organisational support (POS) on work engagement for employees operating within the virtual and hybrid work settings. The idea is to redefine the antecedents of work engagement in work settings that are characterised by excessive technology and work–family conflict.Design/methodology/approachData gathered from 302 academics and support staff employees at a selected university in South Africa were utilised to assess the abovementioned relationships via variance-based structural equation modelling.FindingsThe combined effect of technostress, work–family conflict and POS on work engagement indicates that work–family conflict is a critical component in the relationship between technostress and work engagement. Although POS is seen as a job resource that lessens stress, the study found that the influence of work–family conflict is stronger than that of POS;hence, a negative influence is reported on work engagement. Despite the presence of support, overwhelming technostress creators and work–family conflict issues increase demands and influence work engagement negatively.Research limitations/implicationsThe results noted that, in hybrid and virtual work settings, managers can drive employee engagement by focussing on designing more favourable work–life balance (WLB) policies, providing adequate information communication technology (ICT) support, fostering aspects of positive technology and defining the boundaries between work life and family time.Practical implicationsThe managers need to realise the detrimental effects of both technostress and work–family conflict on work engagement in virtual and hybrid work settings. Expanding the personal and job resources of individuals in hybrid and virtual settings is critical to enable them to meet the additional work demands and to manage the strain imposed by technostress. Instituting relevant organisation support has proved to be inadequate to address the challenges relating to technostress and work–family conflict. Therefore, introducing WLB policies that assist employees to set clear boundaries between work and family time to avoid burn out and spillover is critical. This is especially important when dealing with technostress creators in the remote work setting. Additionally, providing adequate ICT support as well as training related to use of different devices and software should be part of the organisational culture.Social implicationsA manageable and reasonable workload should be maintained bearing in mind the complexity and ambiguity associated with the hybrid work setting. Managers should make allowances for employees to adjust managers' schedules to accommodate personal obligations, as well as adjust employees' workloads to accommodate family responsibilities. As for the coping strategy of technostress and work–family conflict, considering the positive effects of the supportive work environment is important.Originality/valueThis study provides a model on the interaction of the redefined antecedents (technostress and work–family conflict) of work engagement in high-tech environments such as virtual and hybrid work settings.

ABSTRACT

Background: Students worldwide belong to a vulnerable group with an above-average tendency towards depressive disorders. Empirical studies also show that depressive moods among students have increased significantly during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Objectives: The aim of the article is to examine whether the stress experiences caused by the pandemic are related to the depressed mood of the students. In addition, it is analyzed whether resilience, coping and social support as resources are associated with the depressive moods of students. The aim is to clarify which resources can explain the connection between the stress experiences caused by the pandemic and the depressive mood of students as mediators. Methods: The study is based on an online survey of students at Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences for the 2020/21 winter semester. The data of 621 students were evaluated. A mediation analysis was carried out. Results: Pandemic-related stress experiences are significantly related to the depressive moods of students. Resilience is also a significant factor influencing depressive moods and partially mediates the influence of pandemic-related stressful experiences on the depressed mood of the students. Coping and social support show no significant association with the depressed mood of the students. Conclusion: Starting points for reducing the depressive mood lie in reducing the stress caused by the pandemic and in strengthening the resilience of the students.

ABSTRACT

This research was conducted to find the most common sources of underlying stress and what coping strategies encountered by teaching staff amid the Covid-19 pandemic at West Visayas State University Lambunao Campus. Descriptive research methods such as survey and interview techniques were used. An adapted and modified survey questionnaire was used. There were 104 respondents who were specifically selected with consent. Lack of study materials, heavy academic workload, and poor performance on assessment tasks were found to be the most common causes of academic stress. In the psychosocial category, the presence of financial problems, worries about the future, fear of completing assigned tasks, and lack of time to relax were noted. In addition, lack of sleep, irregular eating habits, and lack of a healthy diet were sources of health-related stress. The most common coping mechanisms used by respondents in the face of stress were positive reframing-seeing something good in the situation, learning from the experience, laboriously managing-doing commodity about the situation, taking action to undo or help stressors, and supplicate and meditate. ABSTRACT

Students in distance education are expected to have low levels of happiness in learning. As such, they must possess coping behaviour and self-efficacy to become motivated in school. This article aims to depict the level of students' coping behaviour, happiness, and self-efficacy in learning mathematics amid the COVID-19 pandemic and determine their association. Primary data were gathered through Google Forms from 233 available Philippines. The data were summarized through selected descriptive statistics and depicted their relationship with the aid of Spearman rho correlation. In addition, Kmeans clustering was employed to categorize the students into similar characteristics in regard to coping, happiness, and efficacy. The results showed that students during the pandemic are coping, moderately happy, and possess moderate self-efficacy. The correlation analysis revealed that students' coping behaviour, happiness level, and selfstudents' coping, happiness, and efficacy levels must go together to achieve a good means clustering analysis revealed that there are a group of students with significantly mathematics teachers must encourage their students to engage in the classroom to boost the health crisis.

ABSTRACT

Several studies have shown how mental health could be affected during the COVID19 pandemic, which led us to wonder about the psychological impact that the initial period of lockdown could have. We conducted a multicentric study that sought to describe, compare, and analyze the association between perceived stress, coping strategies and sociodemographic characteristics in a snowballstyle convenience sample of 1169 participants from Colombia, Brazil, Mexico, Italy, and Spain who responded to an online survey. There were differences in perceived stress and coping strategies between countries and depending on sociodemographic characteristics. The variables positively associated with perceived stress were the coping strategies alcoholdrug use, focus on emotions and venting, being a woman, and living in Brazil, Italy, and Spain. The variables negatively associated with perceived stress were planning and active coping, positive reinterpretation, being over 45 years old, and being a worker. These results contribute to understanding the stress responses to lockdown and help identify vulnerability factors in order to design prevention and intervention programs. © 2023 Asoc. ABSTRACT

Income of farming households with low socio-economic status is a task in emerging nations, rural parts of Nigeria inclusive. In connection with this, the entrance of Covid-19 pandemic posed a grave risk to the economy of the households. This study, therefore, investigate the coping strategies in mitigating Covid-19 pandemic's effect on the farming households' income. Data for the paper were collected from 150 farming household heads, through multistage sampling method, with the use of interview scheduled and analysed using appropriate statistics. The findings showed that many (57.3%) of the respondents were male. The widely practiced coping strategies during the pandemic were rationed spending (=2.63), job diversification (=2.40), reduction in hired labour (=2.36), household food rationing (=2.28) among others. There is substantial relationship between household size (r = 0.075, p = 0.003), annual income (r = 0.033, p = 0.004) and coping strategies practiced at p0.005. It was concluded that the pandemic had great effect on the income of the farming household. The study recommends formulation of necessary, effective and urgent policies for assisting and generating fresh employments and revenue producing prospects for affected households.

ABSTRACT

Sweden was one of the few countries that did not close down their schools during the Covid-19 pandemic. Different hybrid teaching methods were adopted, some of which are here to stay. This qualitative study explores the challenges that Swedish mathematics teachers had transitioning from face-to-face to hybrid teaching and the coping strategies that they adopted to reduce the effect of these challenges on their practices, well-being and students' learning experiences. The results from the study were gathered from some 51 primary and secondary mathematics teachers in Stockholm using a semi-structured questionnaire. The data were analysed with cognisance of Lazarus and Folkman's coping theory and Simonson's equivalence theory. The results revealed that hybrid teaching had some negative impact on teaching quality, student achievement, student health, teacher workload, and teacher-student dialogue, which underpins the Swedish school curriculum. This lack of dialogue and high-quality interaction undermines the equivalency theory principle, which suggests that the format of instruction should not influence the quality of students' learning experiences. Also, the results revealed that majority of the teachers ascribed positively to problem-based coping strategies as compared to the emotion-based coping strategy as they worked hard to provide students with good learning opportunities.

BACKGROUND: The Covid-19 pandemic has increased stress levels in GPs, who have resorted to different coping strategies to deal with this crisis. Gender differences in coping styles may be contributing factors in the development of psychological distress. OBJECTIVES: To identify differences by gender and by stress level in coping strategies of GPs during the Covid-19 pandemic. METHODS: A cross-sectional, web-based survey conducted with GPs in Catalonia (Spain), in June-July 2021. via the institution's email distribution list, all GPs members of the Catalan Society of Family and Community Medicine were invited to complete a survey assessing sociodemographic, health and work-related characteristics, experienced stress (Stress scale of the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales-DASS 21) and the frequency of use of a range of coping strategies (Brief-COPE) classified as problem-focused, emotion-focused and avoidant strategies, some of which are adaptive and others maladaptive. We compared the scores of each strategy by gender and stress level using Student's t-test. RESULTS: Of 4739 members, 522 GPs participated in the study (response rate 11%; 79.1% women; mean age = 46.9 years, SD = 10.5). Of these, 41.9% reported moderate-severe stress levels. The most common coping strategies were acceptance, active coping, planning, positive reframing and venting. More frequently than men, women resorted to emotional and instrumental support, venting, distraction and self-blame, whereas men used acceptance and humour more commonly than women. Moderate-severe stress levels were associated with non-adaptive coping, with increased use of avoidance strategies, self-blame, religion and venting, and decreased use of positive reframing and acceptance. CONCLUSION: The most common coping strategies were adaptive and differed by gender. However, highly stressful situations caused maladaptive strategies to emerge.

ABSTRACT

The coronavirus pandemic changed the academic world in many ways, and most academic institutions continue operating through teleworking. The aim of the present study was to determine how satisfied the university community (faculty/staff members and students) in Iran has been with remote work, and the ways in which they have dealt with the lockdown and working from home during the coronavirus pandemic. A survey was conducted among 196 academics from different universities in Iran. The results show that a majority of our participants (54%) are very or somewhat satisfied with the current work-from-home arrangement. The most frequently used methods for managing the challenges of teleworking were social contacts with colleagues or classmates at a distance, solidarity and offering kindness and support to the people around them. The least used coping method was trusting state or local health authorities in Iran. The coping strategies that have the highest impact on overall teleworking satisfaction are "Make myself busy with my working day because it makes me feel useful,""I care for my mental and physical health," and "Think about what I can do rather than what I can't do." The findings were discussed in detail, taking into consideration the theoretical approaches, as well as bringing forth more dynamic aspects of the culture.
